Dark Energy’s Equation of State: The Meaning of w = -1

Dark energy’s equation of state relates its pressure to its energy density. The parameter w is the ratio of those quantities when the same units are used. A cosmological constant has w = -1: its pressure is negative and equal in magnitude to its energy density, while that density remains constant as space expands.

This relation describes how a component behaves in a cosmological model. It does not identify what dark energy is made of, and a value inferred from observations depends on the model and data used to infer it.

Pressure and energy density belong in the same ratio

Write the relation as p = wε, where p is pressure and ε is energy per unit volume. Pressure in pascals and energy density in joules per cubic meter have equivalent dimensions. Their ratio w is dimensionless.

Some cosmology references use ρ for energy density and set the speed of light c equal to one. If ρ instead denotes mass density in ordinary units, the equivalent expression is p = wρc². Mixing those conventions can make the same equation look inconsistent when it is not.

The Particle Data Group’s 2025 dark-energy review, section 28.1, states the convention it uses. Reading that convention is essential before interpreting the symbol w.

Why negative pressure matters to expansion

In general relativity, cosmic acceleration depends on pressure as well as energy density. In a homogeneous, isotropic model, the relevant combination for a component is ε + 3p. Sufficiently negative pressure can make this contribution negative.

For a component with positive energy density, w below -1/3 gives it an accelerating contribution. That does not mean any trace amount of that component makes the whole universe accelerate. The densities and pressures of the other components also enter the total.

Negative pressure here is a property in the stress-energy description. It should not be pictured as ordinary suction pulling galaxies through a surrounding substance. Nor does accelerated large-scale expansion mean that every gravitationally bound galaxy is expanding internally.

A calculation with an expanding volume

For a separately conserved component with constant w in this standard model, its density changes with scale factor a as ε ∝ a^[-3(1+w)].

Suppose a doubles. This is a hypothetical comparison, not a prediction of when our universe will reach a particular size.

  • For pressureless matter, w = 0, so the density falls to one-eighth. The same amount of nonrelativistic matter is spread through eight times the volume.
  • For a component with constant w = -1/2, its density falls by a factor of 2^(3/2), leaving about 35 percent of the starting density.
  • For w = -1, the exponent is zero. The density stays constant rather than becoming one-eighth as large.

The review’s discussion of cosmic-acceleration models supplies the framework and its assumptions. The comparison illustrates why w concerns the evolution of density, not simply the amount of dark energy present now.

Where the density rule comes from

Consider a representative expanding volume V containing one separately conserved component. Its energy is E = εV. The cosmological continuity relation can be expressed as dE = -p dV: changes in the volume and pressure enter the energy accounting together.

Expanding E gives V dε + ε dV = -p dV. Substituting p = wε produces dε/ε = -(1+w) dV/V. Because a representative volume grows as a³, constant w gives the density rule above.

For pressureless matter, the pressure term vanishes and the energy in that representative volume stays constant. For w = -1, the equation instead permits constant ε while E grows with V. Negative pressure is the difference in the accounting; the result does not require particles of ordinary matter to multiply.

This is a statement within the specified expanding-spacetime model, not a proposal for extracting unlimited energy in a laboratory. Interacting components, or an evolving w, require the corresponding conservation equations rather than this constant-w shortcut.

What is special about the cosmological constant

A cosmological constant supplies a fixed energy density with p = -ε. A larger region then contains more of that component’s energy because the region contains more volume. Energy accounting in an expanding spacetime is not the same as counting particles in a sealed laboratory box.

The mathematical behavior is simple; the physical explanation for the observed scale of the density is not. Reproducing w near -1 would not, by itself, settle that problem. Our broader introduction to dark energy introduces the expansion question; w makes one part of the description more precise.

What observations can and cannot determine

Astronomers do not place a pressure gauge in empty intergalactic space. They compare predictions with observations of expansion and structure, including distance measurements and patterns in the distribution of matter.

The inferred constraints depend on assumptions about geometry, matter, gravity, and whether w is fixed or allowed to evolve. A fitted value under a constant-w model is not interchangeable with parameters describing a time-varying function w(a).

A departure from -1 would need careful assessment of uncertainty, data combinations, and alternative explanations. Conversely, agreement with -1 would support cosmological-constant-like behavior within the tested model without proving a microscopic origin. The parameter is valuable precisely because it defines a testable behavior while leaving those deeper questions visible.
